Move Over Amazon/WholeFoods, Here Comes Kroger/Alibaba

Kroger AlibabaKroger’s Simple Truth line of private label natural and organic products will now be available via Alibaba, the global competitor to Amazon.

“Physical store interactions will also drive more traffic to their ecommerce channel, and ultimately Kroger will want to view the physical store channel as their customer acquisition channel, and ecommerce as the convenient option for reorders. This allows both Kroger and Alibaba to own the entire customer journey and ultimately drive higher lifetime value for each consumer.”

Is Voice Commerce “All Talk”?

This article has me scratching my head. The insight is “Only about two percent of the 50 million people who own and use Alexa-ready devices have used them to make a purchase in 2018 so far, according to The Information. And of those who did use Alexa to shop, 90 percent did not try it more than once.” QR Codes ended up being too problematic to catch on but yet interest in the electric car never seems to go away. I don’t think the future voice assistants for shopping is necessarily “all talk”. I disagree with this article and that adoption will increase as the existing bugs are worked out. I envision that the voice assistant will record items as a shopping list and the user will review the list (make corrections as necessary) and then place orders. What do you think?

Supreme Court Decides on South Dakota Vs. Wayfair And Online Retailers Must Charge State Taxes

The 5-4 decision, in South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc., was a victory for brick-and-mortar businesses that have long complained they are put at a disadvantage by having to charge sales taxes while many online competitors do not. And it was also a victory for states that have said that they are missing out on tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue.

How they voted:

For most large online retailers (including Amazon — the country’s largest), the decision will have little impact, since they’ve been voluntarily paying state sales taxes for years. Instead, the burden will be on earlier-stage companies that don’t have the same sort of scale and which will be facing more operational costs as a result.

In The Shopper Battle of Convenience Vs. Curated, Amazon Is Convenience But Etsy Is Curated

“If you can buy 1,000 of anything, it doesn’t belong on Etsy,” Josh Silverman, Etsy CEO said. “In terms of convenience, they [Amazon] warehouse everything in advance so they can ship it to you [the] next day. Well, a great many items on Etsy are made to order, so you simply can’t warehouse them in advance.”

Voice Activated Assistants Take On New Roles Outside Of Checking The Weather And Pre-shopping. Introducing AIY (Artificial Intelligence Yourself)

Most technology is seen as embraced by young, early-adopters that seek out novelty but 51% of those 55 years old and over said a top reason for using their voice-activated speaker is “it empowers me to instantly get answers and information.” (Think with Google)  This is an interesting switch from the typical older technophobe that doesn’t believe tech serves a purpose in their lives.

Additionally, 30% of virtual assistant users claim to use them to track packages. (Narvar)

For the makers, Google launched a line of AIY (Artificial Intelligence Yourself) kits for Voice and Vision on Target.  The Vision kit allows you build a camera capable of recognizing faces, expressions and people.  The Voice Kit allows you to build a voice controlled speaker. (CNET)
